How it works

Three steps. A few seconds.

Food labels hide sugar behind dozens of names. Sugar Decoder does the reading for you.

1

Snap the label

Photograph an ingredient list, or pick a photo you already have. Crop and zoom so only the ingredients are in frame.

2

We read it on your phone

On-device text recognition reads the list and checks every word against 274 known names for sugar.

3

See every hidden sugar

Matches are highlighted and grouped into 7 families, so you can see how many different sugars a product really has.

Inside the app

The seven families

Sugar goes by many names.

Every match is sorted into one of seven practical families, so a long list of unfamiliar words becomes something you can read at a glance.

Sugar / Cane / Beet

From raw and unrefined forms through to fully refined white sugar.

e.g. cane sugar, beet sugar, turbinado

Named Sugar / Carbohydrate

Sugars listed under their own specific name rather than simply “sugar”.

e.g. dextrose, fructose, maltodextrin

Starch / Grain / Syrup

Syrups made by breaking down starch from corn, rice, tapioca and more.

e.g. corn syrup, glucose syrup, tapioca syrup

Fruit / Juice Concentrate

Concentrated juices that sound natural but still add sugar.

e.g. apple juice concentrate, grape juice concentrate

Plant / Bee Sweetener

Sweeteners collected directly from plants or bees.

e.g. honey, agave nectar, maple syrup

Malt / Grain

Sugars made by malting or fermenting grains.

e.g. barley malt syrup, rice syrup

Molasses / Refinery

Byproducts of sugar refining, from dark molasses to lighter syrups.

e.g. molasses, treacle, refiner’s syrup

Families are practical label-reading groups; items grouped together are not necessarily chemically identical.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What does Sugar Decoder actually do?

It reads the text on a food ingredient list and checks it against 274 names for sugar, built on The Blood Sugar Code reference. Every sugar name it recognises is highlighted and grouped into one of 7 families, so you can see at a glance how many different sugars a product contains.

How many free scans do I get?

5 full scans every calendar month, free. Your allowance resets automatically on the 1st. A scan only counts once it completes — cancelling a photo doesn't use one up.

What do I get with Sugar Decoder Pro?

Unlimited scans, plus the ability to save scans to your history with an optional label (for example “granola bars”), keeping up to 100 scans on your device.

How do I cancel my subscription?

Subscriptions auto-renew until cancelled and are managed entirely through your Apple App Store or Google Play account settings — not inside the app. Cancel any time before your renewal date and you won't be charged again.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Text recognition and matching happen on your phone. Sugar Decoder doesn't upload your photos, doesn't need an account, and works offline.

Which languages can it read?

Scanning recognises ingredient names in English, German, French, Spanish and Italian, backed by official EU regulatory text and real product labels. The app's own menus are available in the same five languages.

Is this medical advice?

No. Sugar Decoder is an educational reference. A match doesn't tell you how much sugar a product contains, and a no-match result doesn't prove a product is sugar-free. Always check the original label and talk to a qualified healthcare professional about your diet.
